Why VRAM costs so much: the GDDR memory math behind GPU prices

Almost nobody publishes what a GPU's memory actually costs. This page collects the module prices that have surfaced in supply-chain reporting, models what they add up to per card, and uses the one Nvidia pair that isolates VRAM cleanly, the RTX 5060 Ti at 16GB and 8GB, to show the premium in isolation.

Why is VRAM so expensive in 2026?

A 2GB GDDR7 module runs about $20, and a 3GB module $60 to $70, so 50% more capacity costs over three times as much per module. Memory now accounts for more than 80% of a GPU's incremental bill of materials, and GDDR6 spot prices moved from about $2.50 to about $7.50 per GB since autumn 2025, a roughly +200% move.

Because GDDR memory competes for the same wafer capacity as high-bandwidth memory for AI accelerators, which earns several times more per wafer. GDDR6 spot prices moved from about $2.50 to about $7.50 per GB since autumn 2025. Denser parts are worse: a 2GB GDDR7 module costs about $20 while a 3GB module costs $60 to $70, over three times as much for 50% more capacity.

Buyers are paying a real premium for the extra 8GB, on top of whatever the general kit-hike pass-through already added.
Will more VRAM per dollar get cheaper?
Not soon. The 3GB-versus-2GB module pricing is closer to rationing than a normal supply curve: 50% more capacity for over three times the cost discourages exactly the upgrade buyers want. Relief depends on new memory fab capacity, an 18-to-24-month build cycle, so denser, cheaper VRAM is a 2027-to-2028 story at the earliest.
