Buy the memory, the storage and the cheap end of the graphics stack now. Wait on a flagship GPU, on any capacity upgrade past 32GB, and on a whole prebuilt machine. That split is not a hedge, and it is not the same advice as “everything is expensive, buy everything.” It follows from a specific pattern in the price data: the parts that have already absorbed the largest increases are the ones with the least increase still forecast, while the parts that look least affected are the ones carrying the next hike. A mid-range build priced from this site’s own component data comes to roughly $2,041 today, and memory plus storage is 32 percent of it. That single ratio is what the whole decision turns on.

Which PC parts should you buy now in 2026, and which should you wait on?

Buy 32GB of DDR5, a 2TB or 4TB NVMe drive, an entry-tier GPU, DDR4 if your platform still takes it, a high-capacity hard drive for bulk files, a motherboard, and the PSU, case and cooler. Wait on flagship GPUs, on 64GB and 128GB memory kits, and on a prebuilt PC or laptop.

Four of those ten rows carry no dated price series at all, and the table says so rather than inventing one. There is no per-component price anywhere in this site’s data for a CPU, a motherboard, a PSU, a case or a cooler: the only source that touches them bundles all five into a single figure per build tier. That is a real limit on how precise the bottom half of this list can be, and it is worth knowing which parts of a buying guide are measured and which are reasoned.

Read the two sides against each other rather than down one column. Memory and NAND sit at the top because they repriced first and hardest, and they are also where the forecast is thinnest: TrendForce has conventional DRAM contract prices rising 13 to 18 percent quarter on quarter in the third quarter of 2026 and NAND flash 10 to 15 percent, both moderating because consumer buyers stopped accepting quotes. The bottom row is the warning. An RTX 5080 has moved least of anything here, and it is the part with a reported 20 to 30 percent kit increase still working through retail. Cheap-looking is not the same as safe.

Buy now: the seven parts

32GB of DDR5

This is the strongest-grounded call on the list. The cheapest tracked 2x16GB DDR5-6000 kit sat at $59 in April 2025 and reads $396 as of 15 August 2026, per WhereIsMyRAM’s multi-retailer price chart, with a typical listing at $583. What matters more than the size of that rise is its shape: on the September 2026 read the cheap tier held near $195 through January and February 2026 and then stepped to roughly $380 in early March. There was a window and it closed abruptly. The tracker resamples its own history between reads, so those dates are that read, and a later read on 11 September 2026 put the kit at $425. Contract prices are still rising into the third quarter, so there is no mechanism for the cheap tier to come back this year. Track the level on the RAM price index before you buy.

A 2TB or 4TB NVMe drive

The capacity call here is settled by the data rather than by taste. At the cheapest tracked listings, a 2TB NVMe drive works out at $105 per TB and a 4TB at $119.75, against $150 per TB at 1TB, $186.25 at 8TB and $231.26 at 500GB. Buying a 500GB drive costs 2.2 times as much per gigabyte as buying 2TB. Contract prices have compounded roughly 149 to 178 percent across three quarters of 2026 and are still climbing, if more slowly. An entry-tier GPU

The single most useful number in this whole exercise: at the last verified reading on 2 August 2026, the RTX 5060 Ti 8GB was trading at $359 against a $379 list price. It is the only tracked part in any of this site’s four price datasets selling below its own sticker. The RTX 5060 at $339 and AMD’s RX 9060 XT 8GB at $359.99 carry premiums of 13.4 and 16.5 percent, which is modest by 2026 standards. The reason is unglamorous: these are the cards with the least memory on them, and memory is more than 80 percent of a graphics card’s bill of materials according to TrendForce reporting from January 2026. Buy the tier the premium never reached.

DDR4, if your platform still takes it

A 32GB DDR4 kit runs $128.99 to $240, or $4.03 to $7.50 per GB, which is roughly 60 percent cheaper per gigabyte than DDR5. That discount is borrowed time. The mainstream DDR4 1Gx8 chip went from $12.18 in November 2025 to a record $42.50 in August 2026, a rise of 249 percent, and retail kits have not fully caught up to the chip. The obvious caveat: this only helps if you already own an AM4 or LGA1700 board, because no current AM5 or LGA1851 platform accepts DDR4. If you are on the older socket, this is the cheapest capacity available anywhere, and seven further ways to cut a RAM bill apply on top.

A high-capacity hard drive, with caveats stated

For bulk storage that does not need flash speed, spinning disks are still dramatically cheaper: the 14TB tier reads $27.86 per TB and the 10TB tier $30.50, against $93.09 for the cheapest tracked 4TB SATA SSD. That is a gap of roughly 3.3 times. Three honest caveats belong with that number. The hard-drive figures are capacity-tier medians across eight retailers rather than cheapest listings, so they are not directly comparable with the flash rows. There is no dated prior-period series and no published forecast for them here. And nearline drive lead times were quoted at 52 weeks in a source that is now a year old, while datacenter buyers are substituting toward QLC flash for its roughly 30 percent power advantage. Treat this as the weakest-evidenced entry on the list.

A motherboard

The evidence here is mechanism rather than a price series, and it should be read that way. Boards carry NOR flash for BIOS, and high-density NOR contract prices ran 100 to 120 percent in the first half of 2026 with a further 60 to 65 percent forecast for the second half. That is a real input cost still rising. It is also a small one, and the underlying dataset carries an explicit warning that NOR flash moves are routinely misquoted as though they described consumer SSDs. So the case for buying a board now is that its inputs are still climbing while the board itself has not visibly repriced, not that a specific forecast says boards will cost 60 percent more.

The PSU, the case and the cooler

Nothing in four separate price datasets on this site touches any of these three parts, and that absence is the argument. They contain no DRAM and no NAND, which makes them the only components in a build whose cost is not being set by AI memory demand. Buying them first costs you nothing in a rising market and lets you defer the parts that actually are repricing. In the bundled build data, the non-GPU and non-memory parts of a mid-range machine come to $788 in total, against $502 for the RAM and $152 for a 1TB drive. Build the boring half of the machine now.

Wait: the three parts

A flagship GPU

An RTX 5090 was trading at $4,829.99 against a $1,999 list price as of 30 July 2026, a premium of 141.6 percent. An RTX 5080 at $1,595 carries 59.7 percent. You are not paying for a memory shortage at that point, you are paying a scarcity premium on a die that datacenter demand is competing for, on top of the memory. For the wait to pay off, one of two things has to happen: the reported July kit hike finishes passing through and retail settles, or Nvidia ships something new. On the second, the company is reportedly planning no new gaming GPU in 2026, per TrendForce in February, which would be a first in roughly three decades. Any capacity upgrade past 32GB

The normal rule that bigger kits cost less per gigabyte has inverted. A 64GB DDR5 kit reads $1,075, or $16.80 per GB, against $12.38 per GB at the cheap end of the 32GB range. The larger kit is about 36 percent more expensive per gigabyte. Measured against the expensive end of the 32GB range at $18.96, it is 11 percent cheaper, so the comparison genuinely depends on which listing you can actually find. This is not only a retail artifact: TrendForce reports that cloud providers and OEMs have been shifting server configurations down from 96GB and 128GB modules to 32GB and 64GB. A prebuilt PC or a laptop

The forward evidence on whole machines is strong even though there is no current price series for them here. IDC expects average PC selling prices up 4 to 6 percent in 2026 on a moderate view and 6 to 8 percent on a pessimistic one. Microsoft raised Xbox Series X and S prices by $100 and $150 effective 1 August 2026, stating in its own notice that console storage and memory prices had risen more than 2.5 times with another doubling expected by autumn 2027. Nintendo took the Switch 2 from $449.99 to $499.99 effective 1 September 2026. OEM pass-through arrives on a lag and it arrives alongside quiet specification cuts, which is the part that costs you twice. If the machine you have still works, wait, and buy the parts above instead.

Almost every buying guide treats “GPU” as one decision. The data says it is two. The premium falls monotonically with the amount of memory soldered to the card, from 141.6 percent at the top to below zero at the bottom, because memory is the dominant line in the bill of materials. That is why the same component category appears on both halves of this list, and it is the part of the picture that a single “should I buy a GPU” answer cannot express.

Two things would change these verdicts. The first is the fourth-quarter contract print: TrendForce had published no quantitative 4Q26 DRAM or NAND forecast as of 8 September 2026, so the forward view past this quarter is genuinely unknown rather than merely uncertain. The second is already visible in the leading indicator. NAND wafer spot prices went from $2.70 in October 2025 to a March 2026 peak, and the August reading of $21.13 sits about 8 percent below that peak. Spot leads contract by a quarter or two. If that softening holds, storage is the first thing to stop rising, which is covered as it develops in when RAM prices will drop and the 2027 shortage forecast.

Common questions

Is now a good time to build a PC?

It is a good time to buy about seven of the parts and a poor time to buy three of them. Memory, storage and entry-tier graphics cards have already absorbed most of their increase and have the least still forecast, so waiting mainly costs you money. Flagship GPUs, 64GB memory kits and whole prebuilt machines are where the premium is either extreme or still arriving.

Should I buy PC parts now or wait until 2027?

Waiting to 2027 is unlikely to help on memory or storage. Every forecaster on record puts meaningful relief at late 2027 at the earliest, and roughly $2 trillion of committed new memory fab capacity does not open its first cleanroom until December 2028. What has changed is the rate of increase, not the direction.

Which PC part has gone up the most?

Memory, by a wide margin. The cheapest tracked 32GB DDR5 kit rose 571 percent between April 2025 and August 2026, and the mainstream DDR4 spot chip rose 249 percent between November 2025 and August 2026. NAND wafer spot prices rose further still in percentage terms, but that is a wafer input rather than a part you buy.

Are GPU prices going to drop?

Not broadly, and not soon. Nvidia is reportedly shipping no new gaming GPU during 2026, which removes the usual mechanism by which prices fall, and a reported 20 to 30 percent kit-price increase from July was still passing through retail at the last reading. The exception is the low-memory entry tier, where at least one card already sells below list.

Is a prebuilt cheaper than building in 2026?

Prebuilt machines have become more competitive because system builders buy memory and storage on contract rather than at retail, so they absorb less of the spike. The trade is specification cuts: OEMs have been reducing memory configurations to hold price points. If you build, you choose the capacity; if you buy prebuilt, the vendor chooses it for you.
